Clinical Background

Nowoola Awopetu is a passionate mental health professional and PhD candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at Virginia Commonwealth University. With a strong foundation in clinical practice, Nowoola specializes in trauma-informed care, racial and ethnic identity development, and the mental health needs of adolescents, marginalized youth and student-athletes.

Nowoola’s clinical background includes extensive experience providing individual and group therapy to diverse populations, with a focus on addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD and adjustment issues. His work is guided by evidence-based practices, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), strengths-based approaches, and culturally relevant interventions. Through roles in university counseling centers, foster-care, community organizations, and private practice, Nowoola has helped clients develop resilience, build coping strategies, and achieve personal growth.

His professional journey also includes supporting athletes in enhancing their mental performance, managing transitions, and navigating the unique pressures of sports. As a former Division I athlete, Nowoola couples his firsthand experience of the mental and emotional demands of competitive sports with his clinical expertise to support individuals navigating high-pressure environments.
